Polar Obsession

Author(s): Paul Nicklen

Art and Design

Paul Nicklen's bold expeditions take him underwater to deliver close-up, first-ever documentation of the lives of leopard seals, whales, walruses, polar bears, bearded seals, and narwhals. And he travels over the ice to look at muskoxen, grizzly bears, caribou, foxes, wolves, and much more. Scenes are bathed in polar light, surreal and breathtakingly beautiful. National Geographic is providing unprecedented support to Nicklen both because of his remarkable photographic achievement and because of his contribution to studies on animal behavior and global climate change so consequential today. Nicklin is an emerging star. His inspiring and amazing work offers unprecedented insights into animal behavior and breaks new ground in photography.

Since 1994 Paul Nicklen has published in magazines around the world, including seven stories for National Geographic. His most recent Geographic stories are on Leopard Seals, Narwhal, and the Arctic Ice Edge. The Inuit taught him to read the weather and survive in the Arctic.
