Following the disastrous events on the fortress world of Jago, where the Imperial troops are nearly defeated by Chaos, the Tanith First are pulled back from the front line for rest and recuperation. After two years' garrison duty on Balhaut, however, lack of action is sending the Ghosts stir crazy. Against a backdrop of increasing bad behaviour and insubordination, Gaunt is secretly summoned by Guard Intelligence. They have captured a high-level Chaos officer, but their interrogation is getting nowhere; the man is refusing to speak to anyone except Gaunt. The information the prisoner holds is crucial to Imperial war effort, but will he survive to ever tell it? As a crack force of Chaos insurgents closes in for the kill, Gaunt finds himself trapped in deadly game of intrigue and murder, where no one can be trusted, and the fate of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade hangs in the balance.

" If Dan Abnett held a military rank in the Warhammer 40,000 he would be the 'Warmaster'... Not only does Abnett portray the Imperial Guard structure beautifully but he also does the same job for those that serve within the regiments...'Blood Pact' was bang on the money as far as I was concerned. I'm going to be catching up with this series as soon as I get the chance..." - Graeme's Fantasy Book Review Abnett excels at characterisation as well as fast paced action.A" - SF Site Abnett does a bang up job of detailing the various settings in the book and bringing the universe to life. It feels lived in, alive - If there's one thing Abnett does well, it's write a kick-butt action sequence.A" - SF Signal Abnett's prose grabs you by the throat and forces you to witness the carnage!A" - SFX I was impressed by how he was a master of battle sequences, and still could create ambiguous three-dimensional characters forced to deal with moral dilemmasA" - Pat's Fantasy Hotlist Abnett is the Warmaster as far as I'm concerned!A" - Graeme's Fantasy Book Review
